Upon its inception, the company sold homemade baits for fishing enthusiasts. In 1974 they started a mail-order business selling sporting goods. In 1975, they formed American Rod and Gun, a wholesaling entity serving more than 7000 retailers. As of July 2016, they operate around 100 stores. They market their goods via numerous private label brands such as Ascend, API, Occulus, RangeMaxx, Redhead, Uncle Bucks, Worldwide Sportsman, etc. They also own a restaurant chain, Islamorada Fish Company. Acquired Fishing Holdings in 2014.
